Two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday morning near Almont on Highway 135; 64-year-old John Shomler of Crested Butte and 42-year-old Maria Logan of Sargents were travelling in the same car and both were declared deceased at the scene of the accident.

According to Colorado State Patrol trooper Josh Lewis, Shomler was driving a 2013 Volkswagen sedan heading north on 135 with Logan as a passenger, when he crossed the center line of the highway near mile marker 9. He struck a 2019 Chevy pickup driven by 38-year-old Travis Snyder, who was heading south. The two collided head-on. Snyder was transported to Gunnison Valley Hospital and suffered moderate injuries.

The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. Monday and closed the road for almost four hours. Lewis said that according to the CSP report, drugs, alcohol and speed were not factors in the accident. There was no indication Shomler was attempting to pass another vehicle at the time.
