Little Blue highway work now expected to begin in force Monday

Get over to Montrose easily while you can

The start date of the major road closures on Highway 50 for the Little Blue Creek Canyon project has been pushed back again. This time, spring weather played a role in delaying the start and now the big road closures are scheduled to begin on Monday, April 26.
Originally expected to begin two weeks ago on April 12, the project that is located between mile posts 123 and 127 continues to prepare for the blasting and significant roadwork that will straighten the highway and add safety features to the section of highway between Gunnison and Montrose.

A spokesperson for the project said Tuesday that, “Single lane closures continue throughout the (rest of this) week. The closures were delayed due to the weather.”

Word from people that have travelled the highway this week is that traffic is minimal and most semi trucks have started to use the I-70 corridor as an alternative route. It is still easy to get to Montrose… but not for long.

Once the project starts in earnest, long road closures will be implemented during the week with limited pass-through opportunities available during the weekdays. The primary detour is located on Highway 92.
