Local emergency responders were called to an early morning fire in Crested Butte South over the weekend.

According to Crested Butte Fire Protection District fire chief Rob Weisbaum, an emergency call about a garage fire at the North Star Condominiums on Elcho Avenue came into the district at 3:10 a.m. Sunday morning.

“We arrived on scene in four minutes to find a well involved fire of a two-car detached garage,” Weisbaum said. “A vehicle in front of the garage was also on fire. The fire was large enough it would soon threaten the residential multifamily units. We were able to gain control of the fire and get fire knockdown within nine minutes of arriving on scene.”

One garage was a total loss while the adjacent garage sustained damage; however Weisbaum said many of the items inside were saved and salvageable. The residential units did not sustain any damage and there were no injuries. All units were cleared of the scene around 5:30 a.m.

Weisbaum noted that Crested Butte chief marshal Mike Reily, a member of the CBFPD is also trained in fire investigation and conducted the investigation. The cause of fire is undetermined but appears accidental in nature.

“We are sorry for the loss and damage sustained however we are extremely grateful for our members, quick response time, and fast attack that minimized additional damage that could have been catastrophic,” Weisbaum concluded.
