USPS to seek public input on CB Post Office relocation

Planning ahead for 2026

Patrons of the Crested Butte Post Office should expect to receive a postcard in the mail within the next month asking for input on the relocation of the facility. The U.S. Post Office (USPS) is starting the public process of moving the PO currently located at 217 Elk Avenue in the center of the town’s main business district. The owner of the building has indicated the current lease won’t be renewed in 2026 so USPS officials are starting to look for a new spot that would accommodate a larger facility.

USPS strategic communications specialist James Boxrud said the postcard has not yet been printed but talks have started between the USPS real estate division and Crested Butte town officials. The goal is to find a space within the 81224 zip code.

Crested Butte community development director Troy Russ said discussions have taken place to help facilitate a smooth transition. “The goal of the first meeting was to understand the timing of events and learn more about the Post Office’s specific needs,” Russ explained. “We will get together again in June after they put together a request for information (RFI) regarding specific zoning and utility information.”

The USPS said in a press release that the “desired size of the new facility should be approximately 11,300 square feet with adequate parking. The relocation project will consist of procuring a suitable substitute location, as close as reasonably possible to the existing location. Retail services will continue at the current location until necessary preparations are completed at the new location.”

Citing concerns over COVID-19, the USPS will not be holding a public meeting on the matter. Instead, the agency is asking that public comments on the proposed relocation be sent to: United States Postal Service, Attn Crested Butte, CO MPO Relocation, PO Box 27497, Greensboro, NC, 27498-1103.

The current building is about 3,373 square feet.
