Vehicle-pedestrian accident in Gunnison results in fatality

Driver charged with careless driving

A 25-year-old Gunnison woman was struck and killed by a car while using a crosswalk in Gunnison on Wednesday, July 20. According to the Gunnison Police department, Irene Flores-Zeferino was crossing Highway 50 at the New York Avenue intersection when she was struck by the car.

The police report indicates that 30-year-old William Hines was traveling west on New York Avenue about 9:20 p.m. when he stopped for a red light. According to a press release from the department, “when the traffic light turned green, the vehicle turned left onto West Highway 50 and collided with a pedestrian in the crosswalk. The pedestrian was walking east across Highway 50 in the crosswalk.”

Police responded to the emergency call and the injured Flores-Zeferino was immediately transported to the Gunnison Valley Hospital. She was later transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction where she was pronounced dead.

Hines was charged with “careless driving-causing death” as a result of the traffic accident investigation.
