Position will be posted internally

On Tuesday, December 20, after going into an executive session with the town council, Mt. Crested Butte town manager Greg Sund submitted his resignation. The council accepted his resignation and voted to post the job internally per the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act Part 2. His resignation is effective December 31.

Mayor Nicholas Kempin told the News that based on the discussion during executive session, Sund felt submitting his resignation would be in the best interest of the town.

The News also reached out to Sund on his reason for resignation. “I accepted the interim position to help the town address issues, rebuild trust in the community and move projects forward,” he said. “I think we have made a lot of progress. However, the nature of interim positions is they are short-term. This one simply played out.”

The town of Mt. Crested Butte has experienced a tumultuous year of town manager turnover and has had four different people in the position just this year, including all those serving as interim/acting managers. The council hired Sund in April after terminating previous town manager Isa Reeb.

“It’s been an ongoing doozy,” said Kempin. “But I’m optimistic for 2023.”

Kempin expressed his gratitude to Sund during the meeting. “Thank you on behalf of the town and the council for the work that you’ve done here. You came in at a time when we were really struggling and had a bad experience with a previous town manager, and we very much appreciate what you’ve done to keep things going here and the things you’ve taken on and the relationships you’ve repaired and just generally represented our town in a really great way.”

Kempin also shared with the News, “Greg is a super nice and professional person and has done a lot of great things for the town. He not only kept all the balls in the air but added new ones and truly moved the town forward while he was here. He was much more than somebody that kept things afloat, he also moved projects and policy important to the town forward.”
