CB South Beer League finale

Light team takes the win

By Kevin Van Horn, CB South hockey correspondent

The annual CB South Beer Cup game was held at Big Mine Ice Arena last week and a fierce pace was established early by light team. But dark team’s defense was up to the task and soon the battle was a back and forth exercise of endurance and skill that held up to the beer league standard.

The two-hour melee had both squads showing off their end-of-the-season strength with net minders Amy Bright and James Brennan making everyone work for it. But dark team held a solid lead as time ticked away. That significant lead felt vulnerable as the dreaded call of “Last Goal Wins” was announced by Brennan, and so it was on. Blood, sweat and tears were left on the ice for the final five minutes before a goal by light team sealed the deal. Lead shmead, light team wins!

Much like the skiing, this year’s CB South Beer League season was fantastic. With the addition of several new regular players, numbers were strong, and the games were competitive. Huge thanks to ice guru Ryan Maddox and the ever present Dan Law for making great ice despite the challenges of all that snow, and a 50-year-old Zamboni that, like many of the beer leaguers themselves, is unfortunately showing its age. Congrats to newcomer Scott Reamer for taking home the beer cup as the league MVP.

Now wash that gear, and we’ll see you in the fall!
