Look to recover from action during break

The Crested Butte Titans lacrosse team just wrapped up one of the toughest stretches of their schedule with four games over five days including one against Grand Junction, the second-place team in their league, and one non-league showdown against the Air Academy, the number three team in the state in 4A lacrosse.

The long week of tough games started with a 16-2 loss to Grand Junction on Tuesday, March 25 followed by a 22-1 loss to Air Academy, one of the top 4A programs in the state. Remarkably, following one day of rest, the Titans returned to the field on Friday, March 28 to host the Durango Demons and put up a fight against Durango.

After falling behind 6-2 in the first quarter, the Titans clawed their way back into the game to outscore the Demons 6-3 over the course of the second and third quarters to pull within one heading into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, their comeback bid fell short as the Demons scored three goals in the fourth quarter to seal the Titans’ 12-9 fate. The two teams squared off again on Saturday, March 29 with the Demons holding off the Titans to win 11-5. Wyatt Cook had five goals and two assists, Fraser Birnie three goals and two assists, Luke Walton two goals and two assists, Rowan Dishmon scored twice with solo strikes from Greg Blanco and Bennett Crabtree over the two Durango games. Birnie also continues to dominate faceoffs winning all but two faceoffs across both games and goalie Mason Colucci recorded 13 saves.

Crested Butte has a week off from games for the first time all season and then return to action on Thursday, April 10 when they host the Montrose Red Hawks at the Gunnison High School football field at 4 p.m. The Titans are looking to avenge a 7-6 loss to the Red Hawks earlier this season. They remain at home to host Grand Junction on Friday, April 11 for a second showdown with them as well.

Following that game, they head into the school’s April Break and then return to the schedule with a home game on Tuesday, April 22 against Fruita Monument.
