Public lands resolution
Commissioners passed a resolution regarding public lands last month which highlights the significant role that public lands play in Gunnison County economically, recreationally and environmentally, comprising more than 80% of the total land acreage. The resolution includes five aspects: expressing support for the continued federal management and stewardship of public lands within the county; opposing any efforts to sell, transfer or dispose of these public lands; encouraging Congress to oppose any legislation that would negatively impact public lands and support policies to ensure their long-term preservation and use; urging federal land management agencies to continue tribal consultation and collaboration with local communities, governments and stakeholders on behalf of public lands; and recognizing the multiple uses of public lands while encouraging a balanced approach to land management.
Commissioner Jonathan Houck presented a draft resolution to the board during a work session on May 13, and after some minor tweaks they passed it unanimously on May 20.
