Blizzard takes second place in Salt Lake City hockey tournament

Local Squirt hockey shows scoring prowess

Local Squirt hockey players—Jack Collins, Gage Meredith, Ashton Mabry, Jordy Nichols, Patrick Seifert, Jace Engelstad, Ben Barrett, Walker Carroll, Gus Hensley and Cameron Curtiss from Crested Butte and Josh “Juice” Wallin from Gunnison—competed in the Spring Fling hockey tournament in Salt Lake City this past weekend.  This tournament is for “B” hockey teams and our players play in the Rocky Mountain Youth Hockey League (RMYHL), which is a “C” league. Needless to say, we were not sure how our players would do competing with the “B” teams from larger cities.
Our team came out of the chutes scoring two goals in 45 seconds. We continued on by defeating the Golden Spike Jr. Wildcats from Ogden 10-1 and the Boise Hawkes 7-4. Our team then tied the Salt Lake County Lightning 2-2 to emerge from the pool seeded first, and moved on to the championship round.
With a 5-2 win over the Davis County Wind (north of Salt Lake County) we met the Salt Lake County Lightning again in the championship match. The Blizzard was defeated in a hard-fought game by the score of 2-1. The Lightning is a team selected from all the Squirts in the Salt Lake City area and it was great to see our kids compete with them. Our kids played their hearts out and the parents, coaches and fans were extremely proud of them.
The coaches congratulate the players on a great weekend of hockey in SLC. We also thank Jake and Lauren from the town recreation department for all of their hard work and support this season.
Thanks from the coaches, Steve Curtiss, Jeff Englestad, John Collins, Randy Barrett and Todd Carroll.
