Mt. Crested Butte police officers reported to Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) on Friday, January 13, in response to the report of a man with a gun at Uley’s Cabin. The individual had left the area by the time police arrived and, fortunately, the situation never escalated.
According to public information officer Marjorie Trautman, officers arrived at CBMR at approximately 2:30 p.m. and were transported to the incident location via snowmobile by CBMR ski patrol.
“Upon the officers’ arrival, the man had left the area. He was wearing nondescript clothing and was unable to be located. It was reported that one patron observed a man in the men’s room who was in possession of a pistol. Other patrons and employees at Uley’s reported the same man’s behavior as odd,” Trautman said.
She pointed out that it is not illegal to be in possession of a firearm in the National Forest.
“However, other circumstances including possible alcohol consumption and reported unusual behavior may be cause for concern. This case remains under investigation with limited leads,” Trautman said.
According to CBMR vice-president Erica Mueller, the resort is unable to comment on the situation since it is under investigation by police. The Mt. Crested Butte Police Department is asking that anyone with information related to the case, or other potentially related circumstances, call (970) 349-6516.
