GHS teacher set for initial hearings next month for felony charges

A Gunnison County resident and long-time teacher and coach who has been charged with sexual assault had his first two court appearances last week and will have a preliminary hearing in July. Thomas Kattnig, age 55, appeared in Delta County Court for advisement on May 24, and then for an appearance of private counsel on May 29.

Kattnig has been charged with a class three felony for Sexual Assault on a Child by One in a Position of Trust, based on allegations that he touched a high school student inappropriately during a bus ride to Delta for a basketball game in 2021 and also used inappropriate body positioning with that student during basketball practice drills. He was a Gunnison High School teacher and sports coach for 30 years. The case is set for a virtual status hearing in Delta County Court on July 1 at 3 p.m., followed by a preliminary hearing in person in Delta County Court on July 8 at 3 p.m.
