Local athletes on the world stage this weekend

Coburn, Blunck and Chodounsky

This weekend there are three locally bred athletes on the big stage in their respective sports.
Starting with former Titan stand out athlete and current CU steepler, track and field national champion and Olympian Emma Coburn.
Coburn was selected to compete in the Wanamaker mile run at the prestigious Millrose Games on Saturday, February 16 in New York. Coburn, a 2011 indoor mile All-American and two-time USATF steeplechase champion, will be competing in a very talented field of athletes that includes Abbey D’Agostino (Dartmouth), who placed fifth in the 2012 Olympic Trials at 5000-meters, Jordan Hasay (University of Oregon), the 2011 NCAA indoor mile and 3000-meter champion, and high school sensation Mary Cain. 
Coburn owns an indoor personal record of 4:36.08 which ranks second to former teammate and all-American Jenny (Barringer) Simpson’s collegiate record of 4:25.91.

Meanwhile, that same day all the way across the globe Aaron Blunck will be dropping into a halfpipe in Sochi, Russia. Blunck is having a phenomenal season placing second and fifth at two previous World Cup events as well as finishing seventh at the Winter X Games.
The event in Russia is not only the third stop of the World Cup circuit but will be held at the 2014 Olympic venue.

The next day, Sunday, February 17, David Chodounsky will compete in the slalom at the FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships in Schladming, Austria.
Chodounsky honed his alpine racing with the Crested Butte Ski Club as well as the Crested Butte Academy and went on to race for Dartmouth winning the Division I National slalom title.
He is currently a member of the U.S. Ski Team and is having a banner year posting his best results ever on the World Cup circuit including cracking the top 10 in Adelboden, Switzerland in January.
