Eight petitions pulled for council election

Two interested in being mayor

It appears a competitive election is shaping up for Crested Butte Town Council. The board has three council seats and the mayor’s position open this November and there have been eight people who have taken out petitions to seek one of those seats. Two people were clear that they were interested in running for mayor. One of them is current mayor Aaron Huckstep. The three open seats are currently held by Jim Schmidt, Roland Mason and John Wirsing.

Those who have obtained a petition or are interested in running for council must get 10 valid signatures from Crested Butte voters and return the signed petitions by August 26.
No one has returned a completed petition to the town clerk’s office yet, so names of potential candidates are being withheld.
The election will be a county-coordinated, mail election with no polling place in Crested Butte on the November 5 election day. Voters will be able to vote at the Blackstock Building in Gunnison or by mail.
