Collins case postponed

Some charges dropped

The sexual assault case against a Crested Butte South couple took two turns Wednesday, January 14 in Gunnison District Court. The district attorney dismissed the charges that had been filed against 47-year-old Carol Collins, and Seventh Judicial district court judge Steven Patrick granted a request by defense attorneys to postpone the trial against Kendall Collins for another eight weeks.

The couple was accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a local woman last May after a Kentucky Derby party. During the investigation, officers received information that led them to believe the couple also had an illegal marijuana grow operation located in their home on Teocalli Road. A search warrant was executed May 14. During that search, officers discovered signs of a sophisticated grow operation but the planters were filled with what appeared to be newly planted flowers and vegetables. That led to a statement from a witness in the case that Gunnison County deputy attorney Art Trezise had called him and suggested he warn Collins the police were preparing to search the house; he did. That accusation has resulted in a separate case against Trezise.
Kendall Collins will next appear in court on March 13. He faces two class-four felony assault charges and a class-one misdemeanor assault charge.
