Hoping to hold onto reserves, Mountain Express asks for cash

“How long they’ll last, we don’t know”

Mountain Express director Chris Larsen told the Crested Butte Town Council the up-valley transportation organization is in “a little better straits than they were a few years ago, having built up a $400,000 reserve. But he hoped the town would help keep that money in reserve by contributing $3,000 to the Mt. Express budget for runs it’s added throughout the summer to accommodate special events.

Chapter 2: Pro Cycling Challenge to fly into town

It’s like the Super Bowl of cycling

While a single village might raise a child, it takes two to host a bike race as big as Tuesday’s USA Pro Cycling Challenge stage that comes through the valley.
“It’s got a whole lot of moving parts,” said Crested Butte Mayor Aaron “Huck” Huckstep, chairman of the local organizing committee for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. He attributes last summer’s success to an army of volunteers from both Mt. Crested Butte and Crested Butte. “And I would include [Crested Butte Mountain Resort] in that, too,” he said. “William Buck [mayor of Mt. Crested Butte] and I have a good working relationship. This event has built a connection between the towns. Both town councils are behind it. Also, people may not realize it, but the town staffs are highly involved. Execution takes everybody.” Read More »

Taking Crested Butte to the world

The 200 block of Sopris Avenue is old Crested Butte. The cottonwoods tower high above the street and some of the houses date back to the very beginning of town history. And on the south side of the street there is a small and entirely unassuming log cabin. It was there that Brendan Starr was born in the spring of 1983. It’s a fitting setting for the beginning of a life that is so inextricably bound to this little town.

“His experience will help others…”

(This is part one of a two-part story detailing some of the journey of Cash Lamar and his parents. Told primarily through the experiences of his mother, Roxana Alvarez, Cash and his  experience touched the community.)

This is a story of life and death. Spoiler alert: the ending as it stands, ends in life. That is somewhat amazing given the odds thrown out there the last five months for 8-year-old Cash Lamar. Cash left his home in Crested Butte January 30 in an ambulance and will return for the first time Thursday, June 21. His dad, Craig Lamar, a teacher at the school, said people in the story, including doctors, use the word “miracle” frequently. Read More »

Council adjusts sidewalk seating spaces

It provided hustle and bustle

Summer sidewalk seating will make a return to Elk Avenue this summer. The Crested Butte Town Council tweaked the program Monday to limit the space a restaurant can use to no more than a seven-foot encroachment onto the public sidewalk. Two restaurants that provided outdoor seating last year, Maxwell’s and the Teocalli Tamale, were encroaching closer to eight feet.

Meet the CandIdates for the Crested Butte Town Council

Between now and the end of October, the Crested Butte News will be asking each of the candidates for Crested Butte Town Council questions related to issues in the community.  We are requesting they keep answers to less than 400 words. We started out this week with what we call a “softball” type of question. The questions will get more specific as we move forward. We are also asking the voters to submit questions that we may pass on to the candidates. Send your queries to editorial@crestedbuttenews.com.
Also… everyone is invited to the Crested Butte News Candidate’s Forum being held this year on Thursday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Center for the Arts. Come meet your potential representatives.
