RIP Bill Dickerson

With the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, people are, once again, walking on eggshells. Just as we were getting comfortable with the new way of life, or at least coming to terms with it, that new way of life may disappear as we all get sent back to our rooms with no dessert for not learning our lesson.

Therefore, Kelly McGuire reminded her Talk of the Town teammates prior to their game Tuesday night against the Pitas Meatsticks that it might be their last game as we are now flirting with Yellow on the Coronameter.

And while Yellow, if I’m reading the meter right, doesn’t mean an end to softball, it’s one step away from Orange, which does mean an end to softball, and mandated homeschooling. So, for the health and safety of my child, and my sanity (because it is all about me), wear your mask.

But until then, softball continues and the Talk of the Town and Pitas Meatsticks battled through five and a half innings before the Meatsticks edged out a 15-14 win.

At least some things remain the same. Just when you think you got Pitas, they rally and take it all back.

The Talk of the Town jumped out to 7-0 lead in the top of the first as Garrett McBride set the tone with a lead-off double. Brian Kunes drove him home with a single, Kelly McGuire and Erik Ervin combined for two hits and a run and Courtney Bock upped the ante with a two-RBI single. Mike Spradlin’s powerbunt single added a fifth run and then Hollywood drove two more in with a base hit, only to shoot himself in the foot, getting tossed out stretching for two and ending the Talk’s run.

The Meatsticks’ top of the order responded immediately in the bottom of the first as Thomas McLean led off with a triple and scored off a hit from Emily Crooks. Drew Stichter followed with a single but the Talk defense turned a 6-4-3 double play to slow the Meatsticks down. Bryan Densmore did take a moment to drive a solo shot off of Town Hall before the Talk closed out the inning.

Mariko Kusaka got the Talk back on the scoring track in the top of the second inning with a RBI single to left and McGuire and Ervin combined again for two base hits to drive in two runs, and just when the Talk was looking good up 10-3, Pitas did what they’ve always done—they came back.

Melissa Mason, McLean and Crooks all singled to load the bases and Stichter scored all three with a double to right center. Heather Cooper singled and then scored as Densmore crushed his second dinger of the night to centerfield to cut the Talk’s lead down to one run.

The Talk tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the third inning and their defense tightened up a bit, including a diving grab by Robbie Vandervoort to make up for his batting miscue earlier in the game, but the Meatsticks refused to give up. Crooks tapped a RBI single to left center and then Stichter stroked a two-RBI double to tie the game 12-12 heading into the fourth inning.

But the Talk refused to roll over as well and when Kunes, Ervin Bok and Vandervoort rattled off a series of base hits, the Talk was back on top 14-12.

Both teams’ bats fell silent their next time at the plate but when Lisa Vukovich connected for a single in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Meatsticks came back to life.

Roland Mason stepped up to the plate to tie the game with a two-RBI double off the netting in left center and McLean connected for a RBI single to score Mason for a 15-14 Pitas lead.

The Talk had one more shot, and like the good old days of Jaeger shots, or Rumpleminze shots, or Goldschlager shots compliments of Dickerson, that final shot didn’t sit well, as the Talk failed to score, falling to Pitas 15-14.

Is it news or olds?

If your team won the Wednesday league title you may be wondering why this article is not about that. Well, it’s because the deadline is Tuesday so you’ll just have to wait a week. Ah, the perils of a weekly paper. Fact is, by the time you are reading this, either Pitas OG’s or KBUT are already the Wednesday league champions. But, let’s delve into how both Pitas OG’s and KBUT got to the finals and then next week you can find out not necessarily who won but, arguably more important, why they won.

KBUT is on a miracle run and it’s all about momentum in the post-season. They gathered steam at the end of the regular season, winning their final game and then proceeded to win their next three games in a row, including a 14-12 win over Pitas OG’s, to reach the championship game.

Meanwhile, the OG’s were on an even more serious roll at the end of the regular season, winning their final five games and then taking the win in their opening playoff game before falling to KBUT, sending them on a trip to the loser’s bracket. But that trip, unlike the one my friend had at Hampton Coliseum, was quite pleasant as they beat Irwin Tuckers, CB Extreme and then, on Wednesday, August 14, the Rent-A-Gades, to reach the finals.

The OG’s and Rent-A-Gades squared off at Gothic field that evening with Pitas winning the earlier game against CB Extreme while the Rent-A-Gades sat and watched. A doubleheader can have one of two effects on a team. It can either warm them up for the second game or tire them out.

Wednesday night it had both effects on Pitas as they started out slow and then caught fire as the game progressed.

Meanwhile, it was a horrific start for the Rent-A-Gades as they were about as flat as a team could possibly be for a playoff showdown. While Mikey Strauch did lead off with a big hustle single, the next two hitters struck out looking and the third grounded into a force out. You can’t strike out looking in the playoffs, or ever for that matter in slow pitch softball.

Fortunately, Pitas appeared to be somewhat off-kilter as well to start. While Ben Hayes did lead off with a solo shot and Drew Stichter tripled and scored off a sac hit by Rayna Clark, a 2-0 lead is all they could muster after two innings of play.

The Rent-A-Gades woke up a bit with great defense in the bottom of the second inning and then scored their first run in the top of the third when Jeff Snyder doubled and scored off a single from Crystal Staggs.

But the OG’s, specifically Clark, had some defense of their own as she made another running grab in left field and their bats started to come around in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out rally to score four more runs. After the first two hitters popped out, Stichter drove a solo shot over the right center fence, Garrett McBride and Autumn Carpenter connected for RBI hits and Melvin Seyfried Chicken and Waffles put the OG’s up 6-1 with an error-assisted RBI triple.

The fourth inning was a lot like the third as the OG’s defense turned a 4-6-3 double play to stop any chance of a Rent-A-Gades rally and followed that with another four-run surge to pull ahead 10-1 heading into the fifth inning and then 12-1 by the sixth.

At this point it was now or never for the Rent-A-Gades. Pitas had yet to blow the game out of the water so there was still a lifeline out there in the ocean waiting for the Rent-A-Gades to grab onto.

They grabbed it with one hand in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs as a lead off single and a double from Jake Ellis had two runners in scoring position and no outs. Lauren Alkire punched a single through to score both of them and then wheeled home to score off a double from Peace Wheeler. Jeff Banford added another run with a sac fly RBI to pull to within seven runs.

But, the lifeline soon slipped from their one hand as Pitas scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and closed out the 14-5 win in the top of the seventh to earn a spot in the Wednesday league finals against KBUT.

Stanley family affair

Fueled by the recent storm cycle, and the addition of Joe Otsuka, the Crested Butte Storm men’s hockey team rallied to reach the Southwest Cup finals only to lose to Gunnison powerhouse B&B Printers in the championship game, falling shy of a repeat title.
It was sweet hometown family justice for B&B Printers with the Stanley family hockey lineage firmly in place. Jim Stanley was an integral part of the Gunnison men’s team back when the Southwest Cup started and was there to watch his two sons, Mike and Kevin, win the Southwest Cup as well. In addition, the team was a who’s who of former Gunnison Blades all stars and WSCU club team players bringing a fast and talented squad to the tournament. Read More »

The US Forest Service is seeking public input on Special Use proposals that have been received by the Gunnison Ranger District.
Outfitter and Guide Services
SUMMIT TRAIL ADVENTURES INC is requesting a temporary use permit for a wagon train trip on portions of BLM and USFS.  Route runs from Luders Creek Campground (Rio Grande NF) to the Old Agency Work Center to Los Pinos Pass (private property) to Powderhorn (private property) to Red Bridge (private property) to the intersection of BLM road 3009 and US50. The trip will use approximately 20 individuals using 6 covered wagons and 12 individual horse riders from June 21st – 26th, 2009. 
Recreation Events
BUTTE BOULDERING BONANZA (formerly known as Mile and Half High) is requesting a special use permit for a climbing competition near Skyland Boulders along the Upper Loop Trail, Crested Butte. The event is planned for August 29th.  An estimated 75 climbers are expected to participate.
COLORADO 500 CHARITY MOTORCYCLE RIDE is requesting a special use permit for a Non-Competitive, Charity Invitational Dual Sport Motorcycle Ride to be held from Basalt to Mt Crested Butte to Lake City to Ouray and back, including Silverton, Telluride and Snowmass Village, using approximately 500 miles of Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management roads and trails.  The event is planned for August 18th – 22nd 2009.  An estimated 300 riders are expected to ride in the 33rd annual event.  Approximately 100 riders will be on USFS/BLM trails at any given time
CRESTED BUTTE MOUNTAIN RUNNERS is requesting a special use permit for a series of fun runs that take place in the Crested Butte area from May to September.  Fun runs include Green Lake (Grin and Bear It), Strand Hill, Walrod Gulch, Washington Gulch, Irwin/Dyke, Gothic/Trails, Almont Triangle, and Snodgrass.  An estimated 200 participants may use Forest Service roads and trails during these fun run events between May and September.
EAST RIVER FREE TRAPPERS is requesting a special use permit for a weekend mountain-man rendezvous that takes place in Washington Gulch.  The rendezvous is planned during August.  An estimated 75 participants may attend. 
FAT TIRE BIKE WEEK is requesting a permit for a week long mountain bike festival that takes place in the Crested Butte area.  The bike week event is planned for June 2009 and will use approximately 200 miles of Forest Service roads and trails.  There will be approximately 165 individual participants.
GUNNISON TRAILS is requesting a special use permit for a bike race in the Crested Butte area.  Race begins at Avery picnic area goes to Schofield Pass then on FS Trail 401 to the Copper Trailhead and returns to Avery picnic area.  Intermediate riders would return from Schofield Pass to Avery picnic area.  This one day event would take place on Wednesday August 6, 2009.  An estimated 50 participants will participate.
GUNNISON VALLEY HEALTH FOUNDATION is requesting a special use permit for their GUNNISON/CRESTED BUTTE FALL COLOR CLASSIC.  This ½ Marathon begins at the Irwin cut-off over Ohio Pass towards Highway 135.  Aide stations will be located approximately every two miles along the route. Coordination will be conducted with Gunnison.  This one day event would take place on Sunday September 27, 2009.  An estimated 200 participants will participate.
In order to make an informed decision on the issuance of these permits, the Gunnison Ranger District is accepting comments on the proposals.  Comments must be received within 30 calendar days of the publication of this legal notice in the Gunnison Country Times.  Comments may be submitted in writing to the following address:  Gunnison Ranger District, Attn: Ray Rossman, 216 N. HEARING DATE, TIME AND LOCATION:  The Gunnison County Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing FRIDAY, MAY 15TH, 2009 at  10:00 a.m. in the Planning Commission Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, Blackstock Government Center, 221 N. Wisconsin, Gunnison, Colorado, to hear public comment concerning a land use change permit application.  The applicant is Four Corners Commnet, LLC. The landowner is Taylor Park Trading Post, Inc.
PARCEL LOCATION:  The proposed tower will be located at the Taylor Park Trading Post, 400 Ice Mountain Road, approximately 23 miles northwest of Gunnison, in Taylor Park.  The property is legally described as being located in the N/2NW/4 Section 21 and the NE/4NE/4 Section 20, Township 14 South, Range 82 West, 6th P.M.
PROPOSAL:  The request is for the construction and operation of a telecommunications facility, to provide wireless communication in the Taylor Park area.  The facility will include a 60’ freestanding monopole tower, with three cellular antennas, and two small cabinets at the base of the tower.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION:  Interested persons are invited to submit verbal or written comments at the hearing, or to submit written comments by FAX (970) 641-8585, or by letter (to the County Planning Department, 221 N. FOR THE PROPOSED UPGRADE TO THE RAGGED MOUNTAIN COMPRESSOR STATION
AND REPLACEMENT AND INSTALLTION OF GAS PIPELINES
LOCATED WITHIN PORTIONS OF SECTIONS 8 AND 10
TOWNSHIP 10 SOUTH, RANGE 90 WEST, 6TH P.M.
GUNNISON ENERGY CORPORATION
SURFACE OWNER: The surface owner is the United States Forest Service, Paonia Ranger District, P.O. Box 1030, Paonia, CO  81428.
APPLICANT: The applicant is Gunnison Energy Corporation, 1801 Broadway, Suite 1200, Denver, CO  80202.
PARCEL LOCATION: The location is on National Forest lands, within portions of Sections 8 & 10, Township 10 South, Range 90 West, 6th P.M. 
PROPOSAL: The request is for the upgrade of the existing Ragged Mountain Compressor Station, from 7 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) to 10 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), the replacement of an existing 4 inch gas pipeline with a 6 inch gas pipeline and the installation of 500 feet of two new 12 inch gas pipelines to connect to the Bull Mountain Pipeline. 
ACCESS:   Access will be from State Highway 133, via CR #265 and Forest Service roads.
COMMENT PERIOD: Comments will be accepted for a 15-day period, upon the mailing by certified mail and publication date.
