“We had a great season”

It’s been a long season for the Crested Butte Alpine Orthopaedics high school bike team. The riders saddled up to begin training back at the beginning of August and put a close to the 2012 season on Sunday, October 21 at the state championships in Fruita.
While Fruita does have its fair share of primo singletrack with a sufficient amount of climbing and downhills, race organizers opted for a different kind of course for the high schoolers, one that did not necessarily favor the Crested Butte contingent. Base miles, intervals, climbs and fun

In a town renowned for its bike trails and biking prowess, it only makes sense that the Crested Butte High School would have a mountain bike team.
The team formed back in 2010 and continues to gain strength, numbers and speed with each new fall season, thanks to local bike enthusiasts and sponsorship from Alpine Orthopaedics.
Several local iron lungs and legs have agreed to help develop the fledgling program and bring it to a new level.

Kempin one spot shy of state title

A handful of local riders led by Team Alpine Orthopaedics (Team AO) headed to the San Juan Mountains last weekend for the Full Tilt in Telluride, competing in the cross-country and downhill races. The event was the sixth stop on the Mountain States Cup Series and is the Colorado State Championships. Win in Telluride and you get the official Colorado state championship uniform for the next year or until someone takes the title from you; think maillot jaune meets the Stanley Cup. Read More »

Many places claim to be the birthplace of mountain biking, Crested Butte among them. What many don’t dare to claim is the title of “Awesomest Place to Race Mountain Bikes.” After this weekend, Crested Butte could post that title at the entrance to town.
The Mountain States Cup’s fifth stop of the year featured cross-country, downhill, Super D, and dual slalom racing action. With a cross-country course that is both higher and more remote than any other on the series and a gravity series at CBMR featuring fast, fun race tracks with views of snow-capped peaks, Crested Butte’s event definitely puts the “mountain” back in “mountain biking.” Read More »

Just like Spinal Tap turned it up to 11, so does the 25 Hours in Frog Hollow bike race. Most endurance bike races culminate in one of two ways. Either it’s a 100-miler or 24 hours long. When mountain bikers don’t want to ride up the mountain from Crested Butte, things sometimes get heated. That’s because the Mountain Express, which runs the shuttle buses between Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte, has limited space on its bike racks.
