Superpipe open, steeps next? One more snowstorm needed

“The park is better than it’s ever been”

We’ve received 100-plus inches of snow to date up at Crested Butte Mountain, the superpipe opened this past Saturday and the DC terrain park off Lower Canaan is good to go. And local riders are pumped up.

“The park is better than it’s ever been, the shaping is really dialed in,” said local rider and One Track Mind shop employee Shane Palmer. “They’ve definitely stepped it up with the measuring and physics of it all, and the transitions from jump-to-jump are ultra smooth. And keeping the jib park fresh by switching up the features every few weeks is great.”
“It would be cool if the pipe was [located] at the front of the resort,” Palmer added. “But you can hit the High lift, pipe and then the park in one run—the park’s kind of like a victory lap after everything else.”
Coverage up high is looking good, especially when compared to the meager snowfall the Front Range of Colorado has seen to date. Snowpackers have stacked tracks from Flatiron to Headwall, and one more good dump could be enough to drop the rope on some pockets of extreme limits terrain.
“Mother Nature is looking our way with another major winter storm on the way,” said Kirsten Texler, CBMR spokesperson. “One good snowstorm could be the tipping point for opening more terrain, and once the additional area is deemed safe by ski patrol, skiers and riders will have the chance to play in the extremes again!”
