Mountain Sports team athletes go big on home hill

Skittle thugs in the trick ditch

The Crested Butte Mountain Sports Team (CBMST) hosted the third stop of the USASA Southwest Series last weekend with a halfpipe on Saturday and a slopestyle comp event on Sunday.
While several of the CBMST athletes continue to improve, one skier in particular is on the cusp of the big-time.
Skier Aaron Blunck has stepped up his game both in the halfpipe, a.k.a. the trick ditch, and in slopestyle events this season.
While Blunck laid down a cork 900 on his first run in the halfpipe, he added an additional twist on his second run with a cork 1080.
“He’s killing it,” says coach Hans vonBreisen. “He’s working really hard to improve. He has a pretty solid comp run. We’re just looking to make it solid and second nature.”
Close behind Blunck is skier Matt Evans. The two CBMST athletes are headed to the Aspen Open in two weeks.
“Overall everybody’s riding super strong right now,” says vonBreisen. “We’re always looking ahead to the next event and to improve.”
CBMST snowboarder Alexis Roemer had a solid weekend of competition as well, taking the Cholula Hot Sauce Hot Trick award on Saturday for following a frontside 540 with a backside 540.
Roemer is headed to the Revolution Tour event at Copper Mountain February 7-10. The Revolution Tour is a USSA sanctioned event bringing in a stout level of competition.
“It’s the next step for a lot of athletes,” says Assistant Director for CBMST and “all things knuckledragger” Christian Robertson. “She’s got some new tricks to bring.”
Roemer will compete in the halfpipe as well as the boardercross.
You can catch our local CBMST athletes in action again this weekend as the resort plays host to a USSA sanctioned halfpipe and slopestyle event for skiers.
The slopestyle will be held on Saturday, February 6 and the halfpipe on Sunday, February 7.
“This should bring in freestyle athletes from across the Rocky Mountain Division,” says CBMST director Drew Cesati.
