Catch Wolfpack action this weekend at Big Mine Ice Arena
The Crested Butte Wolfpack finally broke free of the Kremmling Cattle Kings stranglehold to notch a 6-2 win on Saturday, January 15.
The two teams met for a total of four times over the past week and each of the first three times, the Wolfpack had to battle back to salvage a tie.
But in their final meeting on Saturday, January 15, Crested Butte took an early lead and never looked back to seal the win.
The two teams played a week prior finishing both games in ties. Saturday morning in their first of two more showdowns, the game played out nearly the same as before.
The Cattle Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period forcing the Wolfpack to make another comeback bid.
Jake Grogg put the Wolfpack on the scoreboard in the ninth minute of the first period and Ben Reaman tied the game six minutes into the second period but Kremmling responded with two more strikes to take a 4-2 lead into the third period.
Colin Dill netted a goal one minute into the third period and Dylan Curtiss tied the game once again when he scored in the 10th minute.
The two teams finished the game skating through scoreless hockey and they finished tied for the third time in as many games.
The Wolfpack finally broke loose from the Cattle Kings lasso in the second game that day paced by early strikes from Reaman and Max Molitor and capped by a three-goal outburst by Sam Evans to close the game.
Reaman netted the first goal of the game five minutes into the first period on an assist from Curtiss. The two teams played back-and-forth for the remainder of the period until the final minute when Molitor slipped the puck past the Kremmling goalie for a 2-0 Wolfpack lead.
The two teams then traded goals through the second period. Kremmling opened the period scoring in the third minute but the Wolfpack responded less than 45 seconds later on a goal from Ben Frame.
Again the Cattle Kings looked to pull back into the game scoring in the eighth minute until Evans finally found his rhythm on offense.
Evans closed the second period with his first goal of the weekend and then completed the hat trick in the third period, scoring two more to seal the 6-2 Wolfpack win.
The Wolfpack will play their first games of the season at Big Mine Ice Arena this weekend when they host the Gunnison Blades on Saturday and Sunday, January 22-23. The puck drops for both games at 3:30 p.m. They have two non-league games as well on Saturday and Sunday in Gunnison against Front Range squad the Evolution at 11:30 a.m.
