“Got some power on this upper lip”
If they would bring their bats, the Mustache Bashers could be good. Otherwise, they are doomed to a season of mediocrity. They’ve got the defense—they just don’t have very much offense, at least none that I could see Monday night as they fell to the Talk of the Town 15-7.
Maybe when Willy Coburn’s mustache comes in a little thicker, then the bats will follow.
“Got some power on this upper lip,” said Coburn before the game.
True, but just some. They need more. Defense can win championships, just not in slow pitch softball in Crested Butte. Gotta score some runs.
Then there’s the Talk of the Town, which appears to have both offense and defense fairly well intact, all built around the McGuire family—Dave, Kelly, Connor and Ali. The entire McGuire family plays for the Talk of the Town. In fact, it’s an extended family affair with Kelly’s brother, Eric Ervin, also on the team.
The McGuire family set the pace for the Talk of the Town in the first inning of the game as they combined for two hits and two sacrifice hit RBIs to put the Talk up 3-1.
The Talk then retired the side in the top of the second inning and came back to rattle off six more runs.
Chris Kindred and Katie Brawner led off with a couple of base hits. Eric Johnson knocked Kindred in with a single and Robbie Vandervoort scored two more, driving a two-RBI triple to the gap in center field. The McGuire family struck again with Ali, Connor and Kelly all driving in runs as the Talk built a 9-1 lead.
A week earlier the Bashers spotted their opponent 11 early runs but came through later in the game to make it interesting, so the hope was they would do it again.
That hope was dashed over the course of the next four innings as the Basher bats remained relatively silent. Nick Catmur poked a single and scored on a opposite field base hit from Gabe Martin for a second Basher run. Coburn stretched for a triple and scored on a sac hit RBI by Dalynn Trujillo to put three on the board for the Bashers but the Talk responded with five more runs.
Kindred popped a RBI base hit and Ervin showed up late, straight from work, to step into the batter’s box and drop a two-RBI double in left field. RBI base hits from McGuire family added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Talk was cruising with a 14-3 lead.
Big plays on defense from Brice Harrell at third and a flawless relay through Coburn to home to nail a Talk runner at the plate provided some hope for the Bashers as the game wore on but again their offense fell far short of building any momentum.
Their best effort came in the final inning when Catmur and Katie Vandervoort combined for a couple of base hits and Martin drove them home with a RBI triple. Coburn pushed Martin across with another triple but it was too late to mount any real comeback as the Talk turned the final out to seal the 15-7 win.
