WSCU’s Proctor and Szabo named RMAC Athletes of the Month

Third Athlete of the Month honor for Szabo this year

Western State Colorado University track and field athletes Barbara Szabo (Jr., Budapest, Hungary) and Gabe Proctor (Sr., Corinth, Maine) were both named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athletes of the Month for May 2013.
Proctor became a national champion in both the men’s 5,000-meter run and the men’s 10,000-meter run at the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Proctor won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:03.07, setting the facility record at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl. He fended off challenges by American International’s Glarius Rop down the stretch to win the men’s 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:27.77, just 0.14 seconds short of breaking the facility record. Proctor is only the second Mountaineer male in school history to win two outdoor track and field national titles in one year. WSCU’s Michael Aish accomplished this feat by winning the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters in 2002.

Szabo, the three-time indoor high jump national champion, earned her first outdoor high jump national title at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 25 in Pueblo, Colo. Szabo cleared 1.87 meters (6’ 1.5”) earning her fourth career individual national championship and set a new facility record at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.
