Eight WSCU football players honored by being named to all-RMAC teams

Austin Ekeler, Lane Stuht make first team

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selected the All-RMAC teams last Tuesday. Nose guard Lane Stuht (Sr., Loveland, Colo.) and running back Austin Ekeler (Fr., Eaton, Colo.) were both named to the RMAC First Teams. Six other Mountaineers made second and third teams.
As a true freshman, Ekeler was also named the conference’s top offensive freshman in 2013.

After a record-setting season, Gene Upshaw award nominee Lane Stuht was named to the RMAC First Team-Defense. Stuht ended the season leading all of the NCAA Division II in total tackles for a loss (TFLs). His 24 TFL this season ties for the highest in a single season at Western State Colorado University. Stuht was second in the NCAA in tackles for a loss per game at 2.2. Stuht ended his career as a Mountaineer on Saturday with the sixth most tackles for a loss (36.0). Stuht is also tied for sixth place at Western with 15 career sacks.

Ekeler, the primary ball carrier for the Mountaineers in 2013, was named to the RMAC First Team-Offense on Tuesday. Ekeler was also named the RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year, averaging 116.6 yards per game on the ground, which was good enough for second in the RMAC. Ekeler ran for 1,049 yards, which ranked him third in the RMAC and 10th, all-time in a season at Western. Averaging 134.3 all-purpose yards per game, Ekeler tied Bill Rhodes’ record from 1956 on the Western all-time list.

Making RMAC Offensive Second Team was offensive lineman Rene Haro-Sipes (Sr., Fort Collins, Colo.).

Five Mountaineers made the RMAC Third Teams. Offensive lineman Jared Medicino (So., Pueblo, Colo.), defensive end Demo Schmidt (Sr., Firestone, Colo.), kicker Ryan Winke (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) and returners EJ Kreis (Sr., Longmont, Colo.) and Arius Norris (Jr., Denver, Colo.) all made RMAC Third Teams in their respective positions.
