Slurry seal and chip-and-seal
by Mark Reaman
The town of Crested Butte is going to get a taste this weekend of what many towns get all summer: road repair construction. Two primary projects will impact the local streets from Thursday to Saturday, June 18-20. After that, there won’t be any major street projects.
It looks like the slurry seal will finally be put down on Elk Avenue between Fourth and First Streets on Thursday. That will cover the grooves in the street left after the Bud Light, Whatever USA party and the blue paint snafu. A poor mix of paint began to run in the rain after the event, so the town took quick measures to mill up remaining paint. That left the grooves.
A fog coat will then be laid over Elk on Friday to give the town’s main street a completely fresh look. Weather has consistently postponed that project but the initial forecast looks sunny and warm starting Thursday.
The United Company will be in Crested Butte Friday and Saturday to tackle the 2015 road repair projects. Nine sections of town road running by about 14 town blocks will get some cracks repaired and then chip-and-sealed over the asphalt.
The portions of town that will be affected include some sections of Butte Avenue, Teocalli, Maroon, the east side of Elk Avenue, the far west end of Whiterock and Red Lady Avenue. The Treasury Hill subdivision will also get some road maintenance.
While each project will close the street for a little bit while the actual work is being done, town manager Todd Crossett said nothing should be closed for very long.
The Friday and Saturday work are all part of the regular road maintenance cycle that keeps the roads in good shape. “A little work now goes a long way in the big picture,” Crossett explained.
