History of Crested Butte class starts next week

Dr. Duane Vandenbusche will teach the History of Crested Butte beginning on January 26 at the Crested Butte Community School, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday evening from January 26 to April 13, 2017. Topics covered will include geography, Ute Indians, explorers, placer mining, coal mining, narrow gauge railroads, ranching, skiing, social history and satellite mining camps. Film fest shows The Eagle Huntress this week

The Eagle Huntress follows Aisholpan, a 13-year-old girl, as she trains to become the first female in 12 generations of her Kazakh family to become an eagle hunter, and rises to the pinnacle of a tradition that has been handed down from father to son exclusively for centuries. The film plays Thursday, January 19, 7 p.m. at the Center for the Arts and the following night, January 20 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 ($5 for kids through a grant from the Center for the Arts) and are available at cbfilmfest.org, at the Center for the Arts, and at the door, if still available.

An inaugural un-celebration

A group of like-minded citizens who are concerned about our future and want some connection will “un-celebrate” the inauguration on Friday, January 20, 2017 at noon with the regular Friday Peace Group at the Odd Fellows Park, corner of North Main and Virginia. Bring a sign and a clipboard to honor President Obama.

Gunnison County Long-Term Care and Aging seminar

What is long-term care planning and how can it help you age in place? While the population of people over 65 multiplies, Gunnison County has recognized the increased need for education on how to stay at home as long as possible. Senior resource specialists will provide a comprehensive review of benefits, services and support systems available to Gunnison County residents.  The hour-long presentation will be held at the Senior Center in Gunnison on January 25 from 1 to 2 p.m. Interested individuals can RSVP through the Aging and Disability Resource Center Program representative, Diana Baker at (970) 641-7923.

Crested Butte Library Notes:

If you need an art and conversation-filled evening, grab a friend and come join Coloring and Conversation at the Crested Butte Library on Wednesday, January 25 from 7-8:30 pm. Coloring pages, colored pencils, crayons and tea will be provided, or bring your own! The “Clear & Focused, Writer’s Workshop,” originally scheduled for Saturday, January 21, has been postponed until February. The Novel Tea Book Club will discuss Rules of Civility by Amor Towles on Thursday, January 26 at 2 p.m. at the T-bar International Tea House at 229 Elk Ave. Copies of the book are available at the Crested Butte Library or available for purchase at Townie Books.
