Community Foundation helping those who help the valley
By Mark Reaman
There is an obvious and strong connection between Crested Butte and Houston. Hundreds of Houstonians are longtime visitors to the north end of the valley and many have second homes in the area. So in essence, Hurricane Harvey is dramatically impacting some of our friends and neighbors.
This connection is not lost on the Community Foundation of the Gunnison Valley. The CFGV has set up a special fund to help people in Houston get their feet back on the ground. In partnership with the Greater Houston Community Foundation, all of the donations made here will be used to help folks in Houston impacted by the hurricane.
CFGV executive director Pam Montgomery said the local donation money will be sent to the Greater Houston Community Foundation. “They know exactly where to distribute funds to have the greatest possible impact,” she said. “This is a great way for people in the valley to help those who need it and we have had many people call to see how they could help.”
Montgomery said collecting donations to be used elsewhere is somewhat unusual. “Why are we doing this when our mission is to support this valley? For several reasons,” she explained. “Our Valley’s non-profits are the recipients of the generosity of many Texas part-time residents and visitors. Valley folk are good people whose first response is always, ‘How can I help?’ And the last reason is because we can—and you’ve asked us to.”
People can donate online at www.CFGV.org—just click the donation line in the box on the home page. You can also write a check to the cause. Just write them to CFGV with “Hurricane Harvey” on the memo line and send them to CFGV, Box 7057, Gunnison, CO 81230.
