New ballot drop box coming to Mt. CB
Town staff is working with the Gunnison County Clerk and Recorder to install a 24-hour mail election ballot drop box in Mt. Crested Butte. The ballot drop box will be located at the public bathrooms at the town’s free parking lot at the corner of Gothic Road and Treasury. The ballot drop box will be up and running in time for the November election.
Waste Management
Representatives from Waste Management came to the June 6 meeting to answer questions from the town council. Most recently, Waste Management switched to automatic pickup of single stream recycling. Residents now have a 96-gallon bin for their recyclables, which offers 30% more space for recyclables than the previous bins.
“Overall, it’s been a real positive change,” said Waste Management public sector solutions manager Curtis Gardner. “It’s good for residents because they have more capacity, and they don’t have to sort their recyclables. The automated piece is better for our drivers and it’s better for the environment.”
Mayor Nicholas Kempin explained his concern that the new recycle bins will attract bears because the large containers require storing two weeks’ worth of recycled materials, are more difficult to store inside if space is limited and are harder to clean than the smaller containers. “In the past we’ve had bear problems. But the community came together with bear-proof trash cans and education on when to put trash out,” he said. “We don’t want a bear problem to come back. Have you had experience in other communities with this?”
“We don’t want a bear problem either,” assured Gardner. “We have not seen issues in other communities with bears related to these recycling containers.” He noted there shouldn’t be issues if the recycled items in the bins are not contaminated.
