KBUT bus wraps

During their November 3 meeting, the RTA board approved allowing two exterior bus wraps, or “skins,” with artwork to advertise Gunnison Valley radio station KBUT on three buses transporting people up and down the valley. KBUT development coordinator Courtney Welsh spoke on behalf of KBUT about the importance of getting word out to the community about the local radio station that has served the community for more than 30 years, but remains unknown to some residents, particularly down valley. RTA executive director Scott Truex said the skins generally last about three years.

Clean financials

The RTA board reviewed an audit of its 2022 finance statements. The report showed a clean audit, with no irregularities found. Truex said he keeps his own separate financial records for the RTA as well, which matched to the dollar for last year. He said this audit was delayed somewhat because Gunnison County had adopted a new software system that had to be adjusted for within the organization. The board approved, “Just in time to do the next budget,” commented Truex.

Earlier routes requested

Michael Wolf, who works for Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) as a grounds maintenance management team leader, spoke during public comment. “Most of my crew lives in Gunnison,” he said. “During the winter months we are required to arrive at work at 5 a.m. to start snow operations to keep our guests safe.” Wolf suggested adding an early bus for these people, as well as CBMR ski patrollers who also in some cases need to arrive at the resort at 6 a.m. or earlier.

Truex said the current capacity doesn’t support that schedule, but it could be possible in the future. Board members briefly discussed the Gunnison County public works driver schedules as well, noting that the first snow plows leave the shop at 4 a.m., and sand trucks leave at 5 a.m.

Bus barn ready for action

The board approved a lease agreement for the new bus barn allowing Alpine Express to use the new facility for RTA, Mountain Express and Bustang vehicles for $1 annually as a formality. Alpine Express will pay for the utilities and snowplowing, and the RTA will be responsible for taking care of the roof and insuring the building.

Budget approved

The board approved the 2024 budget, which includes $6.5 million in total revenues and $6.2 million in expenditures.
