CBCS construction update

The new secondary science wing at the Crested Butte Community School is nearly ready for students and teachers to move in. The district expects to have a certificate of occupancy at the end of the week, with teachers moving in on January 16 and ready for students on January 20. “The views from the science wing are, second to none, incredible,” said Austin Rosenthal of Artaic Group, the district’s owner’s representative. “It’s a fantastic space and we’re excited to see everyone move in.”

Secondary school classrooms and administrative renovations begin on January 26 to get a jump start on summer work, which also includes the south parking lot, landscaping and hardscape basketball court.

According to Artaic Group, approximately $100 million of the total $121 million budget has been committed and completed, including design, construction and other soft costs. CBCS is about 80% complete with the remaining work taking place summer 2026.

The Red Lady roundabout design, in partnership with the town of Crested Butte, is nearing 60% completion and anticipated to wrap up at the end of January. “Once that design is completed, we’ll be working with the civil engineer the town has contracted with to develop some pricing,” said Rosenthal, and then the district and the town will begin negotiations regarding a funding participation structure.
