Met Rec district willing to support north valley advisory committee

Group of seven to be whittled down to five

An advisory committee from the north end of the valley is being organized for the Gunnison County Metropolitan Recreation District. Seven people have applied to sit on the board; they will get together in two weeks to discuss the north valley committee and decide which five people will be part of the board. The other two will act as alternates.

The seven interested people include Jenny Birnie of the Crested Butte Center for the Arts; Keith Bauer of the Crested Butte Nordic Council; Allison Kuhne of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory; Marilyn Krill of the Crested Butte Music Festival; Dominic Eymere and Chris Behan of Crested Butte South; and Jakes Jones from the town of Crested Butte.
Birnie said the group of seven will be meeting the morning of Thursday, May 14 at the Nordic Center to decide who will be on the committee, what the terms of the seats will be, and in what general direction the advisory committee might embark.
Focused on arts and recreation, the committee will report to the main Met Rec board. That board will officially appoint the five-person committee at the regular meeting on May 18.
According to Met Rec District business manager Lori Patin, the board is very supportive of a regional advisory committee. The board has directed the seven interested people to figure out the basics, choose the committee members and come back to the main board.
The mission statement of the advisory committee is “to identify and advise the Board of Directors of the Gunnison County Metropolitan Recreation District (GCMRD) of the recreational and cultural needs of the residents and property owners within the subdistrict, and perform other tasks as requested by the GCMRD Board of Directors to assist in realizing the recreation needs thus identified.”
The advisory committee also hopes to tap into grants from the Met Rec district when funds are available for projects in the north end of the valley.
