Resort to count gladed terrain as acreage

380 “new” acres boosts resort to 1,547

According to Crested Butte Mountain Resort General Manager Ethan Mueller, a frequent comment from guests is that “the mountain skis bigger than 1,167 acres.” Well, there’s a reason. With the magic of modern technology and in an effort to measure terrain like other ski resorts, CBMR has “found” another 380 acres of measurable terrain within the gladed areas of the ski boundary.

“While putting together the Master Development Plan for the Forest Service, we realized we weren’t counting some of our skiable terrain,” explained CBMR Director of Planning John Sale. “It is terrain all of us have skied for years, off of the Teoccalli lift or East River, even off Horseshoe Springs, but it was never included in our acreage. This is an industry standard and now keeps us in line with what other resorts are doing and is an honest reflection of what our resort acreage truly is.”
The resort will now tout 1,547 acres of skiable terrain. That, said Mueller, will help in marketing to people who for instance go online to compare ski resorts when making vacation decisions.
The resort hopes to be able to submit an official Master Development Plan to the Forest Service before the end of August. That plan will include a new pod beyond Teocalli Bowl that will bring in hundreds of acres more of new skiing terrain.
