Chamber hoping to mellow out next year’s Chainless Race

The local organizers of the annual chainless bike race are deciding how to deal with some of the obvious problems of safety and legality in the competition. Those problems may end up mellowing out the June race that has traditionally started at the top of Kebler Pass and ended on Elk Avenue. Cross-country teams were met with nearly two inches of snow on the course as they lined up for the regional race in Aspen on Saturday morning, October 24. The Titans seized on the questionable conditions though, as the girls’ team took second place to qualify for the state meet, and senior captain Nicholas Harper-Johnson and junior Jeffery Hargrove each punched a ticket to the big show as individuals. In a shaky tourist economy and with some people leaving the valley, what role if any, should the Crested Butte council take to enhance the economic vitality of the area?
I have witnessed first hand many great members of the community having to leave the valley due to the economic instability of the area. The first step the council can take is to ease some of the restrictions already placed on the current businesses (such as the cost of ghost parking spaces). The next most important step would be teamwork. Crested Butte, Mt. Crested Butte, CB South, Almont, and Gunnison have to work together. Instead of separating ourselves, we have to think of ourselves as entity.
