Dirt
To some people, it is one of our most precious natural resources.
By some, I mean 50 million Americans, and growing, according to a study by Shimano and the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA). There are more mountain bikers than golfers in this country. Read More »
Let’s all admit it. It’s a good thing to live in a mountain town.
Or a bike town…
Or a resort community…
A ski town…
Call it what you will.
You get the small town aura… a great place to raise kids; keys still in the car; neighbors chatting in the street; stars in the sky; people who tolerate your eccentricities…
And you get some big city benefits… top flight music at the arts centers, the bars, the music festival, the Alpenglows; quality lectures through things like the Public Policy Forum; a wide choice of coffee shops and restaurants; theatre, WiFi, an airport; people who tolerate your eccentricities…
And it is just beautiful here. It is a good place, my friends. We are lucky.
It is now starting to feel like a bike town, a resort community. Elk Avenue and Mountaineer Square are both filling with people. People coming to the valley bring energy. A good energy.
A lot of positive things were heard about the first big event weekend of the summer. The start of Fat Tire biking in the valley in the form of the Wildflower Rush has received nothing but accolades. The racers came and loved the new trails. The outlying trails like Snodgrass, Hartman’s, Strand, Doctor’s and beyond are in super shape.
The talk on the street was that CBMR was doing something good and concrete to draw people here. What a concept. Kudos to the resort.
The new trails on the mountain are supposed to be great. They are now well marked and fun. They have always been good but with the help of members of the local mountain biking community, the newest trails are apparently fantastic. Trails designed by mountain bikers for mountain biking. What a concept. More kudos.
The new downhill course brought smiles. Comments like “It’s a five out of ten on the fear factor but a 9.5 out of ten on the fun factor. We’ll be back,” were overheard more than once.
Wait, wait, wait. “We’ll be back” is something not always heard here but it is a necessity for the long-term success of this harder-to-get-to-than-normal resort community.
In “interesting” times, a simple formula can be good. We are living in “interesting” times.
Enticing place plus fair price equals a good time that people remember. People remember a great experience and will come back with their friends and families. Ahhh, success.
We should be honored to live in a place where people come to recreate.
Start with a Crested Butte maxim of “If we like it, they’ll like it,” and then they’ll come here, which… let me state the obvious… allows us to live here.
Polishing the equation further, CBMR did the right thing with the addition of sweet, new mountain bike trails. Nice.
In the same arena, to see the county take an active role in working with a longtime ranching family and the Forest Service and move to preserve a beloved mountain biking trail is a good thing.
To see the Chamber of Commerce and local biking community really put out the effort for a new racing event and an invigorated bike festival is another good thing.
It is great to see CBMR taking some steps forward in the summer resort business with community involvement.
Hopefully, this weekend’s Fat Tire festival can build on that momentum.
Again—we live in a mountain town, a bike town, a ski town… and that in itself is a good thing. We are lucky. But it is especially good when you see something interesting actually work.
Talk about a good news/bad news situation.
The Crested Butte-Mt. Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce held a panel discussion last Thursday. The topic was a cheery “What to expect as far as tourism this summer in the valley.” Ouch.
The bad news first: Matt MacDonald of Crested Butte Lodging informed the three dozen people in the room that as of now, reservations are tracking 15 percent to 20 percent down from last year. June and even July are looking lean.
Marchitelli’s Bayou in the Butte Swamp Fest is off the docket for June. There will be no mushroom festival in August or Colorado 400 dirt biker group in September. The lack of these events will impact tourism numbers in a bad way. While not a fully developed picture, the snapshot is looking dark.
MacDonald did say that given the current state of the national economy, people are booking trips closer to the actual time of taking a vacation, so the numbers can pop back up. But they are taking shorter vacations and they aren’t afraid to ask for deals. McDonald said Crested Butte Lodging isn’t afraid to give some deals.
Over at CBMR, the resort’s doctor of numbers, Jeff Moffett, says June through August is looking down but not out. The latest numbers have rooms booked for June, July and August off from 2008, but only by 5 percent.
More bad news; Pretty much every area non-profit organization is getting financially hurt. More organizations are vying for fewer grants. There are fewer business sponsorships and fewer donations. These non-profits help put on a lot of the summer events and provide activities. The Alpenglow through the Center for the Arts, the Crested Butte Music Festival, the Mountain Theatre, and the Museum are all hurting.
Now the good news; The Bicycle Tour of Colorado will bring in thousands of people to Crested Butte in late June for two nights. Ride the Rockies touches Gunnison in mid-June. The Chamber is working hard to give back some panache to Fat Tire Bike Week. A new “Fat Tire 40” bike race is in the works. Live music will be a draw. They are in touch with bike shops around the Front Range.
CBMR’s Moffett says there will be four flights a day into the Gunnison airport instead of last summer’s two. The resort is hoping to make Mt. Crested Butte more of a vacation destination with the Adventure Park, more mountain bike trails and live music on the mountain. “We rely heavily on groups and conferences in the summer,” Moffett said. “That’s where our summer marketing focus is. We are also trying to increase an Internet presence on the leisure side.” Moffett said CBMR is willing to be flexible when dealing with potential customers but more in terms of adding value to a vacation.
Jane Cheney of the Tourism Association said the organization is doing more web marketing. Nice. They have new website, stimulusvacation.com, that highlights free things and “value-added” deals in Gunnison and Crested Butte. Their new ad campaign is geared to “lift Gunnison-Crested Butte out of all the advertising clutter from resorts.” It is a fun “frivolous” look.
Of the $730,000 the Tourism Association spends a year in marketing the area, half is spent on winter promotion and the other half is spent for the rest of the year. Cheney said international visitors are also starting to put this area on their radar.
More good news; The Crested Butte Land Trust wine and food festival is being expanded and there will be big events on the mountain and in Crested Butte. CBMR and the Tourism Association are being nimble and realizing the attraction of “stay-cations.” They are focusing some summer marketing dollars in Colorado and other drive-markets.
One other take-away from the meeting; Longtime Le Bosque Restaurant owner Candy Shepard asked an oft-heard question. Can any of the new summer events be held at a time other than July? July is not a problem. July is busy. Late June, mid-August into September is what could use some help. She is right.
People are trying. No one really can predict with any certainty what the tea leaves are saying. But as we hit the early summer season, it appears there is a real effort being made to make the best of a shaky situation…
“In love with the mountain life…”
An accident on Highway 135 near Crested Butte South Saturday afternoon claimed the life of a Crested Butte man. Twenty-nine-year-old Daniel Ryan Krajewski was riding his motorcycle when he hit a car, was ejected from the bike and killed. Read More »

Notice of Public Meeting for the public water System
april 20, 2009 ~ 6:00 pm
town hall, council chambers
507 Maroon ave., Crested Butte, Colorado
Topic: Water Distribution System Pipe replacement, and Design of New Storage Tank at Water Plant
A public meeting will be conducted for informing citizens and soliciting public input, written or oral, regarding the Crested Butte water distribution system pipe replacement project, and design for a new storage tank at the Crested Butte Water Plant. The water distribution project includes the replacing 2320’ of old 6” steel pipe and 480’ of 6” cast iron pipe, with 6” ductile iron pipe. The project also includes the design of a new 1 million gallon water storage tank. A report is being submitted to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to qualify Crested Butte for Stimulus funding and/or a State Revolving Fund Loan.
The current 6” steel distribution pipe to be replaced was installed in 1962. The 6” cast iron pipe was installed from 1962 through 1976. The primary health risk is system failure due to age, corrosive soils (pipe bedded in Coal Ash), and possible back siphonage due to a major main break. There were four main breaks in 2008. The town has only one 500,000-gallon storage tank, and the peak demand in the summer can reach 800,000 gallons per day. Therefore the need to start design on a new secondary storage tank to help meet peak demand, as well as future build out and emergency water demand.
Estimated construction cost to replace the distribution system piping is $980,000. Estimated cost to design a new water storage tank is $50,000.
A copy of the report is available for public review, prior to the Public Meeting, at the following location:
Town of Crested Butte,
Public works Department,

Notice of Public Meeting for the Wastewater System
april 20, 2009 ~ 6:00 pm
town hall, council chambers
507 Maroon ave., Crested Butte, Colorado
Topic: Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Upgrades, and Collection System renovations
A public meeting will be conducted for informing citizens and soliciting public input, written or oral, regarding the Crested Butte Wastewater Treatment Plant and Preliminary Engineering Report (PER). The PER is a report detailing the project consisting of the structural, architectural, electrical, and mechanical requirements associated with the design of a new clarifier and its integration with the existing system. The project also includes the rehabilitation of 20 manholes, and 23,000’ of 8” AC sewer pipe. The report is being submitted to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to qualify Crested Butte for Stimulus funding and/or a State Revolving Fund Loan.
The current WWTP’s secondary clarifier is over 30 years old, and does not meet the Colorado Department of Public Health design criteria Policy 96-1. The WWTP has no redundant clarifier, and a side water depth of 10’ (minimum side water depth is 12’). Therefore, a new secondary clarifier is being designed and constructed. The collection system rehabilitation is to prevent inflow and infiltration. The average daily flow to the WWTP is approximately 200,000 gallons per day. During our annual spring melt (May/June) the peak flows can exceed 800,000 gallons per day. The plant has a design capacity is 600,000 gallons per day.
Estimated construction cost of the new secondary clarifier is $1,700,000. Estimated cost of the collection system rehabilitation is $750,000.
A copy of the Preliminary Engineering Report is available for public review, prior to the Public meeting, at the following location:
Town of Crested Butte,
Public works Department,
507 Maroon Ave, Crested Butte, Colorado.
