Jail being looked at by Colorado Bureau of Investigation

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been called to look into the possibility of illegal activity at the Gunnison County Jail, after an employee was fired from there in December.

“The CBI was involved at my request, as we do not investigate ourselves,” says Gunnison County Sheriff Rick Murdie. “They had the time and officers available and at this time of year our other local entities were pretty well tied up.”
Dave Linnertz, director of the CBI’s Grand Junction office, says the CBI can be called to assist local law enforcement with all types of investigations, including those that smaller jurisdictions, like Gunnison, “don’t have the man power or expertise” to handle.
“I heard right before Christmas that we had been asked to help with an internal investigation [in Gunnison County]. But that is an ongoing investigation and it cannot be commented on,” says Linnertz.
No details of the investigation were released.
Murdie says the matter is “not a big deal” since he has seen several employees fired for various reasons during his tenure. He added that he would not comment until the investigation is complete. No date for the completion of the CBI investigation has been given.
