Brick Oven closes season with win over Bacchanale at Big Mine

Town league playoffs start February 12

Town league regular season came to a close on Tuesday, February 10 in a battle between the cellar dwellers as seventh placed and winless Brick Oven took on the sixth place Bacchanale squad. In the end, the two teams flipped-flopped spots in the final standings as the Brick Oven handed the Bacchanale a 3-1 loss.
The two teams traded off shots with sporadic offensive opportunities but goalies Reed Schaub and Jay Harris had early stops in the game to maintain a scoreless tie.
The Brick Oven took a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game when Chris Tanis took a pass at the point from Dolly Schaub and blasted it past Harris.
The Bacchanale put together a solid two minutes of pressure following the initial strike to offer up several shots on goal but Schaub and the Brick Oven defense smothered every lane to net.
Dick “the Grey Ghost” Whiting proved he still maintains a deft touch and sharpshooter precision. Whiting carried the puck into the Bacchanale zone and picked the upper triangle with a wrister from just inside the blue line to give the Brick Oven a 2-0 lead after one period.
The Bacchanale opened the second period with a flurry of shots on the Brick Oven net but Brick defender Colby Deer hit the deck repeatedly to block nearly every attempt.
The Brick Oven netted its third goal of the game when Nathan Lacy jumped onto the ice for a line change and straight to the puck to pick the upper triangle clean with a flick of his wrist.
The Bacchanale broke their scoring drought early in the third period when Mark Goldberg followed on a rebound off a Pete Nichols blast to poke it past Schaub.
A power play for the Baccahanale offered up one last shot at finding the back of the Brick Oven net but the work of the Brick Oven defense and Schaub in net denied every attempt to hold onto the 3-1 win, their first of the season.
Town league playoffs kick off Thursday, February 12 with games at 7 and 8:45 p.m.
