Please return Crested Butte South bikes

Six of 12 bikes missing

Since the introduction of the Crested Butte South community bike program over a year ago, six of the 12 community bikes have gone missing.

The Crested Butte South Property Owners Association is asking community members to keep an eye out for the missing bikes and call 349-1162 with any information about their whereabouts—or to please return the bikes if people are keeping them.
Two of the bikes had disappeared before last winter and were never returned. Over the course of the summer, an additional four bikes have gone missing. Crested Butte South POA manager Chris Behan says he often finds the bikes lying in people’s yards around Crested Butte South. Some bikes have even managed to find their way into Crested Butte.
The POA asks that bikes be left at either the Crested Butte South POA offices, or the intersection of Highway 135 and Cement Creek Road. The bikes have serial numbers engraved on the back and are covered in stickers that say Crested Butte South Community Bicycle.
Behan says the misuse of the bikes could put an end to the community bike program. “My temptation would be to just keep them in a garage until we get them all back. I don’t know, maybe we just wait until they all disappear,” Behan says. “I haven’t talked to the board, but I highly doubt they want to put more money into the program.”
Behan says the community bicycle program has been popular and the few bikes that remain are used frequently.
