Free Nature Programs

The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory presents free nature programs for children in grades K-3 and their families. Come Thursday, September 17 from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. at the Old Rock Library in Crested Butte. This month’s topic: “The Black Bear.” In September learn about the black bear. Learn through literature, music, hands-on scientific investigation, visiting scientists, and hand-outs for further investigations at home with the family. Through a generous grant from Gunnison Area Community Foundation we are able to offer our programs to the public for free. For more information please email enviro-ed@rmbl.org

Distribution/Posting of Promotional Materials

Unfortunately, board policy prohibits the distribution/posting of promotional materials within the school. We regret that we have had to turn down so many requests to do so. However, we suggest that if you would like to include your kids’ event or announcement in the “Kids Calendar” free of charge, please contact Melissa Neuner at melissa@crestedbuttestudio.com by Monday at 11 a.m. to be included in that Thursday’s edition of the paper. Thanks for your cooperation.

CBCS Accountability Meeting

A tentative date for the first CBCS Accountability Meeting of the school year has been set for Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 4 p.m. in the Media Center at CBCS. At the October 7 meeting, SAAC will conduct an election for SAAC committee members for two-year terms. Committee seats up for election include: Grade 6-8 parent (currently Betsy Cohen), Grade K-12 parent (seat currently vacant), At-large community member (currently Joy Adams), Grade 6-8 employee (seat currently vacant), and classified employee (seat currently vacant). In addition, SAAC will elect its officers for the 2009-2010 school year, and will appoint the CBCS representative to the RE-1J District Advisory Accountability Committee for a two-year term. Persons interested in serving on these committees are requested to attend the October 7 meeting or to indicate their interest to the CBCS school office in writing prior to the meeting. If you know someone who might like to serve in one of these positions, please don’t hesitate to recruit them.

Absences

Just a reminder to parents, if your child will be absent from school for any reason, please notify the school. If we do not hear from a parent by the end of the school day, your student will receive an Unexcused Absence for that day. We will make an effort to contact parents but it is ultimately your responsibility to notify us about any absences. Thanks for your cooperation.

Rotary International Youth Exchange Program

Interested in traveling, a great cultural experience or attending school in another country? The Rotary Club of Crested Butte is seeking high school students who are interested in applying for the Rotary International Youth Exchange Program. To find out more about the countries, costs, purpose, deadlines and to receive an application, please come to an informational meeting to be held September 23, at 3:30 p.m. in the library. Parents invited. Call Kay Gentry at 349-5755, if you want information but can’t attend.

Staff Appreciation Luncheon

We have our first Staff Appreciation Luncheon coming up on Thursday, September 24. We have only five luncheons this year. September 24, November 19, January 21, March 25 and May 13. We have a luncheon every other month instead of monthly—I hope this helps with all of our very busy schedules. Per usual, please have your dish there between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Elementary comes in first, about 11:15, MS at 12:10 then HS at 1:10 so if you have a preference, plan for that. (Sometimes much of the food is gone by the time the HS staff gets there.) I will set up the day before but will need some help for clean up the day of about 2 p.m. on. A reminder that you need not bring serving utensils. Also, if you use a serving dish from home, please label it so we know who needs it back. You can retrieve your dishes anytime after 2 p.m. the day of the luncheon. If you want to bring your recipe the teachers sometimes ask for them. Also, remember we have at least one severe nut allergy so if you cook with nuts please label your dish as having them. I believe there are several vegetarians as well so if anyone leans that way, that would be great. If you have any questions, or would like to RSVP for the luncheon, please email me at kraatzcb@msn.com or call me at 349-0234.
