County sets mil levy for fiscal year 2010

Expect to pay at least $76 in property taxes for every $100,000 in home value

Gunnison County has set the mil levy for fiscal year 2010 at 9.546, with part of that going to the Hospital Fund, Library Fund and Human Services Fund.

The county’s General Fund will initially get a hefty 15.127 mils, but after a temporary tax credit of 7.529 mils the county will collect only 7.598 mils in fiscal year 2010.
The Hospital Fund, Library Fund and Human Services Fund will get a total of an additional 1.924 mils, bringing the total county mil levy to 9.546.
According to Assistant County Finance Director Ben Cowan, that will mean a county tax bill of $95.46 for every $100,000 of a property’s assessed value. Assessed value is not to be confused with a property’s appraised value.
Due to mandates from the Colorado state legislature, the assessed value of a residential property is only a fraction, or almost 8 percent, of its appraised value. So a Gunnison County homeowner can expect a tax bill this year of $75.98 for every $100,000 of their home’s value that will go solely to the county’s general fund.
Residents will also have to pay more in property taxes for each of the taxing districts, like the Crested Butte Fire Protection District or the Gunnison Watershed RE1J school district, depending on which districts their property is covered by.
“The levies are determined by boards of the tax authorities: schools, county, city, fire and others. The total mil levies range from 33.217 to 93.846, so the Gunnison County portion of any particular tax bill ranges between 10 percent and 29 percent of the tax bill,” Cowan said.
County residents will see the change in property tax this year.
