Lobar kicks Wine-Os to the curb with big win

Comp league title there for the taking

Women win titles for teams in the competitive softball league. If you’ve got women who can hit and field, there’s a good chance your team will go far.
The Lobar showed that Monday night crushing the Wine-Os 23-10 at Gothic Field. The Lobar women connected for a total of 14 base hits led by Katherine Long, who hit 4-4 including three doubles.
Remarkably, with all of that power, the Lobar is still only in fourth place.
Meanwhile, the Wine-Os came into the game Monday night in second place. But strange things were afoot at the Circle K that evening for the Wine-Os. They did not appear to be the powerhouse that they are, given their 8-2 record. In fact, the Wine-Os are the only team to hand the reigning comp league champions- the Airheads- their only loss of the season thus far.
Both teams opened the game swinging with former Wine-Os turned Lobar players Mike Stanley and Rick Barnard connecting to drive in four runs.
Stanley opened the scoring with a RBI double and Barnard cleared the bags with a three-run shot over the centerfield fence.
Lobar women Long, Lori Adair and Ashley Chahine all slapped base hits to put runners in scoring position.
Bob Piccaro followed with a RBI double to the gap in right center and Michael Faktor and Stephanie Clark capped the opening rally with RBI base hits to give the Lobar a 7-0 lead.
The Wine-Os responded in the bottom of the first, scoring six runs. Brandon Snyder led off with a triple and scored on a single by Molly Keating. Lindsey Antonio and CJ Hoigaard connected for back-to-back RBI base hits and Mark Nesemeier—fresh off a 17-hour drive from Kentucky to make it to the game—drove two runs in with a single.
With two runners on and no outs, the Wine-Os were set to take the lead and it appeared we had a comp league offensive showcase on our hands.
But, the next three Wine-O batters popped out and the inning ended with the Lobar lead still intact.
The Wine-Os offense then disappeared while the Lobar continued to tack on runs through the next three innings.
Daniel Hargrove, Stanley and Barnard did most of the damage for the Lobar with Chahine adding in a two RBI base hit and at the end of four innings, the Lobar had a 14-7 lead.
Nesemeier added in a lone highlight for the Wine-Os offense with a solo shot and the Wine-Os defense threw three Lobar runners out at the plate over the course of the next three innings but there was nothing they could do to stop the Lobar’s offense.
Faktor cracked a two-run home run and Adair capped her night with a two-RBI double as the Lobar opened up a 23-8 lead by the seventh inning.
The Wine-Os put in one last effort in the bottom of the seventh to score two runs off an error and a base hit by Elsa Karajecz but fell well short of making a comeback to lose 23-10.
The regular season ends this week and there will be a break in the action next week before the playoffs start on Monday, August 8. Don’t forget, the Crested Butte Parks and Recreation Department and the Tommy Ruben Villanueva Sports and Recreation Fund are putting together the tenth annual Ball Bash Saturday and Sunday, August 13-14.
