Two men investigated for attempted murder
The Gunnison County Sherriff’s Department is investigating two men for attempted murder, after receiving a call at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 21 concerning a possible shooting two miles east of Gunnison.
Officers learned that three males were involved in an altercation and shots were fired. The man who reported the incident, a possible victim, told the officers that he had been shot at and had returned fire.
The officers started a search for two missing suspects, and on the morning of August 22 at approximately 7:30 a.m., they located the suspects’ vehicle near the 180-mile marker of Highway 50. The vehicle had been mechanically disabled.
At approximately 8 a.m., officers located the suspects in Sargents, where they were arrested without incident. Citizen reports suggest the men hitchhiked to Sargents on a shuttle bus that runs from Gunnison to Denver, but Gunnison County sheriff Rick Besecker says that detail cannot be confirmed.
“We believe they made their way from where they had abandoned their vehicle to Sargents on a shuttle… That’s not a main key component to the investigation so we haven’t traced that as of yet,” said Besecker.
One male sustained two minor gunshot wounds and was transported to Gunnison Valley Hospital for treatment and observation. The second suspect was transported to the Gunnison County Detention facility. Both will be held for investigation of attempted murder.
According to Besecker, one of the three men involved in the incident is local, and two are not. At this point, it is not clear how long the men had known each other but Besecker said it appears they met recently.
The case continues to be investigated.
