Bond formally charged with five felony counts, one misdemeanor

Details coming

The former executive director of the Crested Butte-Mt. Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce is facing five felony counts and one misdemeanor charge in connection with his role as treasurer of several local non-profit organizations.

Charges were formally filed Monday, December 5 by the district attorney’s office against Richard Bond. Bond, the former Chamber of Commerce executive director, had served as treasurer for the local Rotary Club and the Red Lady Coalition. Missing money from the non-profits has allegedly been connected with Bond.
D.A. Keith Mandelski filed five felony counts of “theft in a series.” That indicates Bond is accused of taking between $1,000 and $20,000 in each of the five counts. He is also charged with one count of theft under $500.
The D.A. filed the charges Monday and is working with the County Court, which has set a hearing date but will not announce it until Bond has been served the summons to appear in court to answer the charges. That should happen within a week.
In the meantime, the court will not release specific details of the individual charges until Bond is officially served the court papers. Bond’s attorney was informed that charges were being filed. Bond did not reply to an email request for comment.
The Gunnison County Sheriff began an investigation into the case last summer after “banking irregularities” were discovered with the Rotary Club’s account. As a result, the financial concerns were reported to the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office and a long investigation started. A search warrant was served to the Community Banks of Colorado as part of that investigation. It appeared that approximately $40,000 in funds disappeared from the Rotary account over the course of time that Bond was acting as treasurer.
