Mikey’s buries Peak Consulting

Good team, great pizza

Regardless of how the votes added up in this year’s Best of the Butte, I think Mikey’s has the best pizza in town, and their town league hockey team ain’t bad either.
After dropping their season opener in a nail-biter to the Eldo, Mikey’s came back to crush Peak Consulting 7-3.
Peak Consulting is a new franchise to town league with an interesting mix of talent that includes seasoned local hockey veteran Dan Law, who has come out of town league retirement to enjoy the new roof; local preacher Tim Clark; and former men’s league Cutters stand-out John Mortell.
It will take some time for them to gel but in the meantime they may be in for a couple of beat-downs from some of the top-tier teams in the league.
Peak Consulting had the chance to score early with Mikey’s goalie missing from action. Mikey’s called on Mike Potts to fill in at the last minute but the game started as Potts prepared, leaving Mike Preston and Tom Schaffer to trade off time in-net without the luxury of the goalie gear.
Mikey’s, still without a goalie, struck first as James Allo skated into the Peak zone to score. Forty seconds later and still without a goalie, Mikey’s struck again as Paul Moscatelli slipped through and gave Mikey’s a 2-0 lead.
Mikey’s then had Peak pinned in their zone for a good five-minute stretch, firing away at Peak goalie Ben Dougherty. Dougherty held off the first round of shots but Mark Phwah slid open in the slot to take a pass from Moscatelli and score for a 3-0 Mikey’s lead.
Peak Consulting recovered from initial bludgeoning and mixed their lines to get their offense going. With Clark and Charles Gano holding at the blue line, Peak turned the tide on Mikey’s, pinning them deep in their zone. The effort left Clark and Gano open at the point and when the puck squirted out to Clark, he dished it across ice to Gano. Gano stalled the puck and unleashed the high heat through traffic to beat Potts for Peak’s first goal of the game.
Peak opened the second period fired up off the goal and looked to chip away at Mikey’s lead, but Potts was strong in-net with a handful of big saves. Mikey’s took control of the game to finish the period. Dougherty came up huge in-net with a series of saves to hold the Mikey’s lead to two goals heading into the final period.
Mikey’s defenseman Sean Norton had seen enough though, and took matters into his own hands to open the third period, scoring two goals in 30 seconds to open up a 5-1 Mikey’s lead.
Adam Chater poked one through for Peak but Mikey’s responded when Moscatelli fed Rusty Thompson with a pass and Thompson scored for a 6-2 Mikey’s lead.
Gano stuffed a rebound in for his second goal of the game but Moscatelli put the finishing touches on the rout, beating Dougherty one-on-one for the 7-3 Mikey’s win.
