Committee in the works to maintain CB cemetery

There’s a need to maintain the asset…

The Crested Butte Town Council has agreed to form an official cemetery committee. The standing panel will be responsible for guiding the town’s policy regarding cemetery operations, maintenance and future needs.

Town Clerk Eileen Hughes has been spearheading the formation of the committee and will put out the call for interested citizens who might want to serve on the panel. “We’ve had several phone calls from interested people,” she told the Town Council.
As part of the new group, a representative of the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum will serve on the board, along with five citizen members, a member of the town staff and a member of the Town Council. The council will appoint one of its members to the committee at the next meeting.
“Staff hopes an ongoing cemetery committee will energize interest in the cemetery and promote recognition of the historical importance of the cemetery and the need to maintain this asset,” Hughes wrote to the council in a staff memo.
She suggested the committee address the need for a capital campaign for chapel repairs and a possible secular addition to the chapel; develop a noxious weed plan for the area; address restoration of gravesites that are in disrepair because family members are not available to maintain the lots; and review existing cemetery rules and make recommendations for revisions.
The council agreed to the concept and letters of interest will be solicited from people interested in being a member of the committee.
