Vehicle vandalism spree hits Gunnison

Broken windows on more than 23 cars

More than 23 vehicles have had their windows smashed in a crime spree in the city of Gunnison. The Gunnison Police Department is investigating the spree, which took place the night of Monday, October 1 and the early morning hours of Tuesday, October 2.

Detective Chris Danos said there were a couple of additional reports the week prior and a similar incidence might have occurred the next day, but it’s unclear if that’s related or not. “But within the last two to three weeks a number of windows in vehicles have been broken,” he said.
So far, the police department has not received any reports of theft. Damage has been limited to broken windows but police are declining to say how they have been broken. According to Detective Danos, the police do have some leads in the case but are still requesting additional information through the Crime Stoppers hotline.
“We’ve got an idea of what’s causing the damage and who, but so as not to skew Crime Stoppers’ information coming in, we’re not going to share what we might think,” Danos said.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity or has information about the person or persons responsible for the crimes is asked to contact the Gunnison Police Department at 641-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 641-8280. Callers may remain anonymous and could qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
