WSCU falls to Colorado Mesa in swim meet

Record setting meet

Four pool records and four WSCU school records were broken at Friday afternoon’s swimming and diving meet in the WSCU Natatorium. The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks defeated the Mountaineers by an overall score of 135 to 90.

The Mountaineers got off to a great start, winning the 200 yard medley relay because of a Maverick disqualification.
CMU’s disqualification didn’t stop WSCU from setting a new school record in the process. Kelsey Forbord, Hannah Giles, Danielle Ginsburg and Krista Ruff broke the record with a time of 1:57.43 seconds. The 2012-13 WSCU squad had set the record earlier in the season with a time of 1:57:84.

After losing the first race of the meet, CMU rattled off seven victories in a row. During that span, the Mavericks broke two pool records, one in the 200 individual medley and the other in the 200 freestyle.

Despite finishing second in the 200 individual medley, Ginsburg set a WSCU school record with a time of 2:22.20. Ginsburg beat the previous record 2:26.36 by a whopping four seconds.

Forbord, the current school record holder in the 100 backstroke, took first in the event with a time of 1:03.91.

Elmore, a distance specialist for the Mountaineers, set another school record for the Mountaineers in the 500 freestyle. Elmore finished with a time of 5:41.24 but finished less than a second behind the race winner, CMU’s Maddy Wigg (5:40.70).

Colorado Mesa’s Amanda Jennings set the pool diving record for 11 dives at one meter. Jennings’ total score was 380.18, beating the old record held by WSCU’s Rebecca Tarczy at 362.10. Tarczy scored a total of 338.90 at Friday’s meet.

Jennings also set the pool record for six dives at one meter, compiling a score of 215.38. Tarczy set the school record in the same event on Friday with a score of 195.50.

The Mountaineers will face the Mavericks again next weekend. This time the Mountaineers will be the team on the road at the Colorado Mesa Invitational on November 17-18.
