WSCU cross country runners dominate Mountaineer Open

W Mountain Race this Saturday

The men’s and women’s Western State Colorado University cross country teams both earned team titles at the 2013 Mountaineer Open. The Western men finished first through ninth, while the women took six of the first seven spots.


Vegard Olstad (Jr., Gjovik, Norway) was the fastest male. Olstad won the eight-kilometer race with a time of 25:19. Tara Richardson (Sr., Wiggins, Colo.) finished first for the women in the six-kilometer race. Richardson ran a time of 22:14 to take the title.


For the men, Ian Butler, Tyler Saiz, Michael Cernoia, Adam Sinda, Keifer Johnson, Garrett Wilson, Michael Schmidt and Bryon Puentes all finished in the top nine.
On the women’s side, Julie Pack, Anna Marshall, Melanie Becic, Cassie Ortiz, and Torie Weprin finished in the top seven.


Five other colleges competed in the 2013 Mountaineer Open, held along the Van Tuyl Trail System in Gunnison. Join these elite athletes on Saturday, October 12, as Western track and field and cross-country host the 63rd running of the W Mountain Race. To register check out gomountaineers.com.
