Unattached runner Anna Marshall (Sr., Pueblo West, Colo.) broke the women’s W Mountain Race record on Saturday. Marshall broke Western State Colorado University men’s and women’s cross country head coach Jen Michel’s 2002 record.
Michel’s record of 19:37 was bested by Marshall’s time of 19:32. Marshall ran as an unattached runner, having expended her eligibility in cross country. Marshall will compete in both indoor and outdoor track and field for the Mountaineers in her final season.
Ian Cox (Fr., Littleton, Colo.) was the first men’s runner to the top in the 64th Annual W Mountain Race. Cox was the overall winner of the longest running race in the state of Colorado. Cox finished with a time of 17:06, which was 18 seconds ahead of second place finisher Andrew Smith (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill.).
Also running was former men’s record holder Dennis Leck, who set the record in 1996 with a time of 16:26. Leck’s record was broke by Scott Dahlberg in 2009 and re-set by Western assistant cross country coach Josh Eberly in 2011 with time of 15:40.
Western cross country continues the 2014 season next Saturday at the Tiger Open in Hays, Kansas.
