Fatal motorcycle accident near Blue Mesa reservoir last month

Head-on collision involving a Mack truck and Harley Davidson

By Cayla Vidmar

Two people were killed in a motorcycle accident last month near Blue Mesa Reservoir. At approximately 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21, a Harley Davidson motorcycle with two occupants—driver Timothy Stump, 59, and passenger Kay Stump, 62, from Fort Worth, Texas—was heading eastbound on Highway 50 by Blue Mesa when they crossed into the westbound lane, colliding head-on with a Mack truck.

Both motorcycle passengers were declared dead on the scene. The driver of the Mack truck, a 55-year-old male from Grand Junction, did not sustain any injuries. The Colorado State Patrol is wrapping up its investigation of the accident, and according to Trooper Josh Lewis, “It does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.” It is still unknown why the motorcycle crossed out of the lane and into oncoming traffic.
