Uphill access permitted, Nordic trails remain open

Vail Resorts announced on Tuesday that all of its North American resorts and retail stores, including Crested Butte Mountain Resort, would remain closed for the remainder of the 2019/20 season “amidst the continued challenges associated with the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).”

CBMR senior communications specialist Will Shoemaker shared with the Crested Butte News that uphill/skinning access on the mountain will be allowed until further notice, but no sledding. CBMR on Wednesday also donated most of the remaining perishable food from the resort, a truck full of food estimated at more than 2,000 lbs., to the Gunnison Country Food Pantry to help serve folks in need during this time.

The Crested Butte Nordic Center has closed, but grooming continues and trails remain open. Executive director Christie Hicks said rentals and passes are still available online, and an employee will set them outside for you. She also said that the Nordic Center is looking into moving to long-term rentals sometime in the next week, so season pass holders can hang onto skis for an extended time.

“We’re still figuring things out but I think it is extremely important to keep trails open and equipment available as long as possible for our community,” said Hicks.
